The Sauna Culture 🧖‍♂️

Sauna is not a luxury in Finland; it's a necessity. There are over 3.3 million saunas in Finland for a population of 5.5 million. It is an integral part of the culture, used for physical relaxation, mental peace, socializing, and wellness.

  • Löyly: The spirit of the sauna. The blast of steam and heat created by throwing water over the hot stove stones.
  • Avanto: Ice swimming. Finns love to intensely heat up in an 80°C sauna and then immediately plunge into a frozen lake or roll in the snow!
  • Vihta / Vasta: A bundle of fresh birch branches used to gently whip yourself in the sauna. It improves blood circulation and smells incredible.
  • Etiquette: In public, gender-separated saunas, being naked is the norm. Bring a small towel to sit on. Quiet, respectful conversation or silence is expected.
